That's how I started using circle hooks, started small and then worked my way up. Use a limp rod one with a fast tip and put you rod in a rod holder. I started with nightcrawlers at first. I caught tons of little fish, channels, blues, carp, drum, suckers....pretty much everything. I used the small octopus circle gamas, size 6 to 2/0.
I bought some small circle hooks several years ago to use for smaller fish and never used them much. Last year while bait fishing I starting having issues with gut hooking several small drum. I had never had this issue in the past. So I tied on a small circle. It took me awhile to get use to not setting the hook. But after awhile I did fine. No more gut hooked bait, and I actually enjoyed it. Will be using them again this year when catching medium sized baits.
