My lil bro has been fishing a river in west Virginian religiously and has been hooking up with some big ass fish....he will get a forty inch fish clear to the bank just to lose him four ft shy of victory...any pointers for getting a productive hookset on a muskie? Thanks guys...hes only thirteen and if you could help solve his problem I know it'd make his year!

Stiff graphite rod, with braid on a reel with instant anti reverse, and change the hooks out that come on the lures with high quality treble hooks such as Owner, VMC, etc.

Like Chuck said quality hooks and keep them sharp.Learn how to sharpen hooks and do it often. You can actually set the hook a few times to get them buried. He could try to loosen the drag if there is not a lot of wood in the water. Muskies will tire fairly quick because the strike and the first run they burn most of their energy. That's why you can loosen up the drag, let them play themselves out not you.Invest in a good long handled net, there are some good telescoopic ones out there.Hope this helps. I do some Muskie fishing but mostly from a boat.

Good replys everyone, and great points. I would like to ask though, Is your brother getting over welmed in them final seconds? I have seen lots of fishermen loose big fish at the bank or boat from being overcome by nerves or adrenaline. Alot of fights don't begin until they are on a short line, or see whats happening You get em shallow and its like hooking into a second fish alot of times! rollo
