I fished for a couple hours on Sunday morning with the start of out going tide in a creek of the Potomac River below the 301 bridge,Machodoc Creek. It is very skinny water with the average depth of 3 ft. The guy that we fished with shoots,Gar,Carp, and snakeheads in the creek and brought his bow with him. My wife and I were throwing hookless rope lures. We saw a few gar and snakeheads but couldnt get the gar to bite. We saw a few snakeheads, but they didnt stick around long enough for a shot. He did manage to get 2 shots off on gar with the second one hitting its mark. It was a nice 10.4 lb. longnose. It wasnt long after he shot that one,the phone rang and we had to get our daughter that was at her Aunts house. That was the first time ever seeing bow fishing and I found it pretty interesting. The Gar didnt go to waste as It was simmering in hot oil about 4 hrs. later. Here is link to the picture in OS Nets Facebook page. www.facebook.com/#!/pages/OS...s/138043639508

We catch gar during the daylight hours when the cats shut down during the dead of summer. We typically uuse a float ser up with pieces of cut bait. When the clicker goes off we give them a few minutes to swalllow it down and then we set the hook. Seems like thats the only way you can catch them on a hook.
Do you like those rope lures? We thought about making a few but never got around to it.

I've made a few rope lures and caught a few gar on them. I attached rope to a spinnerbait or buzzbait but I have seen people use just the rope. I always have a rope lure with me when I go canoeing and spot fish the gar. I've only caught 3 or 4 on hooks. When I'm catfishing and a clicker starts screaming and then there's nothing on the end of the line I've always blamed it on gar, but I've never been positive.

I am beginning to doubt the rope lures, even though I have read alot about them. My wife caught one last year on one, which was her first ever cast with a rope lure. I think they are in full spawn mode here, as the one we got this weekend was full of eggs. They are the nastiest looking eggs I ever saw, too. They are a gray color, and are supposed to be toxic to humans.

We went out and tried gar fishing for a few hours the other day. Ended up fighting a few for brief periods, but only brought one to the boat. We were fishing cut bait under slip floats 3' deep and using treble hooks. Even hooked a few up while sight fishing for them. There tons of fun, just wish we'd catch more.
I might have to give a rope/panty hose lure a try sometime.
