It's time to re-spool again. I bought silver thread an40 in bulk last year so I re-spool quite often, 3000 yards I believe. I just wanted to create a thread to answer some questions I have had over the years. Here they are:
How often do you re-spool mono on your baitcasters?
I have found that the line I use develops memory after about a month of use. Since I have it in bulk I re-spool every month and a half. This doesn't necessarily mean that the lines bad, I just feel that after a month of sun damage it and a few fish/snags that it wouldn't hurt to change it.
Do you have any tips or tricks for re-spooling?
I know that I have been having a hard time keeping the line really tight. After I spool and test the drag, my line bites into the spool. To solve this problem I have found that by using a wet wash cloth to pinch your line when re-spooling helps to keep the line tight.
Do you run your line through all of your eyes on your pole before re-spooling or just the first one?
I have found that by running the line through the first eye that the line tends to fill up on your reel on one side or the other. This is also caused by pinching the line to one side or the other. Thoughts?
Does it really matter which way the spool turns when I re-spool my baitcaster?
I know that with spinning reels that this can be quite the problem. You re-spool the wrong way and your first cast is a nightmare. Does it really matter on baitcasters? I really haven't noticed a difference, but then again I haven't payed too much attention .
How does braid or a super-line differ from mono in terms of re-spooling? Is there different maintenance that is required?
When you store your pole after a trip out on the water does the line get damaged when I reel the line tight?
I have noticed that every time I check my line before baiting up I find a little s bend in my line where the line was tight on the tip of the pole during my time away from the water. I usually cut it above the bend and retie. Is that necessary? Better safe than sorry I assume.
Anything else?
