I have been experimenting with various types of fishing lately and have found a need for new rods and reels. We started drifting cut bait under floats in and around snags, so I needed a light catfish reel that was reliable enough for the occasional blue. So I bought an abu 6500. I wanted to start fishing a channel on the river that was 50+yards off of the bank. So I bought an abu 7000 pro rocket and a 11' Tsunami Air wave rod. I also purchased a couple abu 7000's earlier this year. I feel pretty confident with my new set ups. Now I just have to find the fish. We should get into some blues in early October, so It will be a good test for them.

Thanks guys. I have enough rods and reels now to bring another person (little brother/dad) along on our river trips without risking losing big fish on their light poles. We have been hitting the river once or twice a week lately in hopes of landing some Pb blues. So far just a few channels, drum, gar, and baby blues. Won't be long now.
FYI: The pro rocket isn't as great as I had expected. In reality it doesn't cast much further than the other 7000's. It is however a little smoother casting and reeling. Maybe if it were made in Sweden and not china I would have liked it more. I ended up really liking the tsunami air wave. Its extremely light weight and loads up nicely. Just had to make a larger pole stand for it.

in my experience the 6500 throws 30# and under line better then a 7000..........7000 is just better at throwing larger diameter line then 30#
I gotta 12' ocean master surf pole that i've experimented putting a 7000 on it and a 6500........try putting that 6500 on that surf pole with some 20#-25# line and I bet you will throw halfway across the big river.....

i took another look at your pic........you might wanna try switching reels with the catmaxx and the surf pole.......not trying to say what's right or wrong, but it might help if you want better distance with that surf pole........

Thanks for the advice, I'll have to try that. I have noticed that the 6000's and 6500's outcast the 7000's most of the time. The catmaxx rod does perform really well with the larger baits we throw, its stiffer so its more forgiving. The reel thats on it now is spooled with maybe 60 yards of 30lb test. I have at points nearly casted out of line with 3 ounces of weight after freshly spooling it. It was really the key reason for getting the 7000's. I love my 8' catfish series ugly stiks, so i usually run those with 7000's for circle hooks. I have a suspicion though that they may not be strong enough to land some of the larger blues swimming in the river especially in strong current. I wish I had several 9' rods with the strength of a berkly reflex, and half the weight. They have a soft tip, yet a strong enough backbone to get the job done.

if you're in the market for a new rod in the near future check out the kingkat supreme rods from catfish connection.......joey 6500 turned me onto them and they are sweet, especially for the $ i think they go for $35 out of the catalog.......i know it can be hard to buy a rod before holding it though, but they are well worth the money...

I was planing on picking up a rod or two this winter. I need to find something a little heavier than the ugly stik catfish series. I'll definitely pick one up for 35 or 40 bucks.

I'm looking at the catfish connection catalog online and I can't find those rods anywhere. Must be in the paper catalog only. Those Berkly E-cat rods look pretty tempting though.
