My gf would like to start flathead fishing with me more this year and I'm at a loss as to what rod I should buy for someone with a smaller frame...she better suited to long or shorter rod and lighter or heavier action? Thanks for any info...

My girlfriends about 130lbs and her favorite rod is a berkly reflex. Its a heavier rod because its made of fiberglass, and it has a fast action tip with a stiff backbone. In my opininion the rod doesn't matter too much, as long as you turn the drag down she should be fine. Also longer rods are harder to battle fish with, so fatigue might be a factor during long battles with light drags.

I'd say a 7.5 to 8 footer. Be a pretty versatile rod. The Catfight rods have a soft tip for live baits and also will work well for circles. Also the white pro nite sticks would be good. Both are all around good rods and good priced. Both being 7.5 footers it wouldnt be too long but not to short either. For the quality and money though you can't best the Catfight rod and not just saying that because of our sponsor. I'm getting 5 myself after Christmas.

Thanks for any info... Get her the same set-ups that you use and train her to use them like you do. That way if something happens to your relationship, you still have rigs that you can use, LOL!!!

I have 2 of the white pro nite sticks kip mentioned. they are a solid rod for either hook option. light and easy to carry. good price. if you are looking higher up the food chain the surge trophy cat MH rods are badass. I have used these in both casting and spinning. I have no other real experience with spinning rods when it comes to cat rods.

Nothing against the Surge rods, I just don't like the single wrapped eyes. Such a good blank and eyes but looks poorly built. A guy as rough as me would be missing eyeless in no time.

I hear ya kip. honestly though i beat the hell out of my stuff. not on purpose just kind of happens i guess lol, but i have never lost one. probably just jinxwd myself, but for me they have been a solid rod. all that i said i hate the fact that they are single wrapped too.
dave, good choice. its really hard to buy a rod without holding it to really feel the action on it, but both the catfight and amer spirit rods will be great for her to multi species catfish rather than just flatheads or just channels.
