I've caught plenty of flathead in rivers but I think I can find larger fish in the lakes.
Now when I river fish it is for blues in the Ohio or on the James river.

Didn't make it to the James this winter--no one showed up after saying they wanted to go. I made plans to take Kayla during her Christmas break from school next year.
She may catch a blue cat bigger than she is. She already got a flathead bigger than she was when she was 5 or 6.

Gonna install a new impeller in the little boat and do a few things to the pontoon and I'll be ready. The water flow in the 9.9 is a little weak so I want to make sure I don't overheat it this summer.
Mostly just clean the pontoon up a bit so my wife will go on it fishing.

I use suckers early when water is cool. I favor gills because they are easy to get and have for bait. When water warms where the gills die on the hook I change to goldfish till the water is again cool enough for the gills to tolerate. Rock bass seem to be favored over gills but they are hard to catch bait size. I have used small carp when I get them in a cast net. I tried bullheads over a period of several years and have never been able to get flathead to take them in the lakes.

I Usually start as early as possible but don't get many flats till the water warms a bit.
