Sean I also bank and boat fish. I recently puchased a qautum big cat 7'10" mh, and plan to purchase an American Spirit 7'6" mh or heavy. Good luck Sean. Sorry about all the modified post this smartphone is whoppin' this oldman's butt. LOL

Sean, I sure am no expert but I do think that there are alot of variables such as method of fishing ( bank, boat, clicker, tightlining etc.) Type of catfish(flats, blues, channels) type of hook being used(circle, octopus, kahle etc.) For example someone bank fishing using circle hooks may want to use a 9' rod with a med. or med.heavy action that allows the rod to load up,but someone fishing from a boat using a clicker and an octopus hook may prefer to use a 6' or 7' heavy action rod (broomstick) to allow for a solid hookset, this (may?) allow big fish to be more easily pulled clear of snags also. I hope this helps. Stainless guides are a very valid consideration as Jason stated.

Also very nice fish Sean and friend, I am sure ya'll had a nice fight on your hand's, I would like to add the fact that the ODNR does list the Freshwater Drum as a sportfish. I have caught Drum and they sure are fun, but I too have not eaten Drum and do not intend to. Catch and Release for me.

I would agree with you these fish put up quite a fight, and I have been told they are the freshwater version of the highly prized redfish who are known to put up a very good fight. I have had oldtimers tell me they are excellent table fare. Very nice fish brother.

Talked to a buddy today he said he caught 11 walleye/sauger last sunday at an Ohio river dam, he said the spring run has started. Just want to throw that out there for anyone interested. Any MEMBER who would like the location send me a PM and I will hook you up.

It sure was easier to pick a hook back then, pretty much just big or small. LOL

Having started catfishing in the 70's I can say yes the techniques are very similar today 30+yrs. later, the biggest difference I see today is the tackle, tech, and conservation. Sean that was very observant of you to bring up that point.

Sean all is well, just kick back and enjoy the positive for that is why Kip built this site.To answer your question I enjoy reading all types of hunting and fishing books and magazines during the winter months, and Pat I'm with ya on the tackle catalogs.

Sean I for one took no offense with anything you had to say infact I found it quite informative. I simply tried to give a plug to the many great catfishermen on this site that have freely given me so much help and advice. I hope you continue to write freely on this site because you are very well versed and positive. I can see you truly love to fish and have alot of knowledge to share, with that being said I don't see why anyone would be offended.
