Picked up 2 older 5000's off a family friend for $20. They needed some major cleaning but the older ones are extremly simple and I got them greased and lubed like new. Wanted to downsize my channel rigs and these are perfect.

Definitely going to be going after some channels as soon as possible this year.

I've always fished deep and moved a lot earlier in the year trying to drop a bait in front of their faces. I will try shallower/warmer feeder creek areas this year like you mentioned though. That's normally where I'll target channels early season.

Million dollar question and the answer is use the one you like. I personally do not like braid others I know don't like mono. Use what works for you. I've used both before and trying to grab some other opinions. Also never drifted with braid and wondered how that would work out. I'll experiement with both and give a write up of my results later into the season.

Found an older 5000 on ebay for $15 free shipping so I ordered it. Said it was in working order and I received it today and the handle and star drag were bent to where it was rubbing and would barely turn. I bent it back and the gears and such are still rough so I'll have to give it a good run through and possibly replace a few parts. The seller said he didn't know anything about reels and will be refunding me my $15 as well and I can keep the reel. Ended up with a free reel out of the ordeal and should be perfect for a channel rig. Still always in the market for some new rigs though.
I also saw a lot of bad reviews on the Ming Yangs.

I normally don't run my clickers from the boat. I just put them in the rod holders and let the circle hooks work their magic. I mainly drift or run bobbers for channels as well. But there are some years where Abu made 5500s with clickers on them, and yes that would be ideal just in case I decided to use it.

Yea I'm more concerned with tournament fishing so that's why I'm looking for heavier poundage on my channel rigs. I want to get those fish in fast and not give them chances of getting off, especially if it's a good fish. When I'm fishing for the freezer or just to have a good time I like using small tackle for channels for the fun and losing a fish here and there isn't a big deal. I use Trilene a lot now and 20# Trilene just seems really thick.

Started targeting channels more last year and plan to do more this year as well. I'm debating between mono and braid. Braid I can run more poundage with less diameter and debating on switching to braid I currently use 14lb mono. I do use slip floats for channels a lot and will need mono for this because braid likes to float and not work well with bobbers. Also don't know which would be better for drifting. Plan on either switching to some braid or finding a smaller diameter mono and running 20# or so. Any suggestions?

Looking for some smaller reels for channels. Old, new, used, beat up, doesn't really matter as long as it's in working order. Also I saw some people online recommending those Ming Yang reels if anybody knows anything about them.

Thanks guys, he's not my biggest to date but biggest with a shotgun. Most of my deer have been killed with my bow.
It's definitely pretty crazy in the woods on small tracks of public Scott. Hunt on the ground and stay down behind some trees. Some guy I didn't know was there about 300yds above me on the hill actually took a shot at this buck after I shot him and he was running off. It had to of been a 300yd+ shot. It scared the crap out of me.
Chuck, my old school dehydrator crapped out on me earlier this year. I normally make tons of jerky out of bucks being they're so tough. Instead I made pounds and pounds of burger and sausages with this guy. I just got a Cabelas ad and they have a nice dehydrator on a christmas sale I may jump on.
Late season can definitely be very productive Jordan. On public land that we hunt, the woods don't get touched hardly at all by other hunters anytime after muzzleloader season. The public land I've hunted for a while now recently had a bunch of land surrounding it get sold in plans of building more houses and even apartment complexes is the word. I'll be doing some late season scouting with the snow on the ground down on Wayne in case the new construction pushes deer away.

Doesn't seem like too many people post about hunting on here but since there's a section for it I'll post a topic. I ended up getting 2 does early in the season with my old Bowtech 82nd Airborne. Had 5 encounters with different mature bucks running and chasing does this year but could never get them close enough or a clear enough shot. I hunt all public land so any mature buck is a shooter for me usually. I probably have seen more bucks than does this year with the majority of my sightings being small bucks. I normally don't hunt much or at all during gun week but this year I went out opening day and man was it packed. Luck would have it, I look over and 2 bucks were walking my way. The small one was in front and a nice one behind him. They dropped down in the ravine that is right next to me and the small bucks comes back up at about 15yds from me. He mingles for a little and then winds me and looks over and blows out. Soon as he does I stood up and shot the other one that was following him. Ended up seeing 5 other hunters on my drag out. I thought my chances of getting a buck this year were over after not being able to close the deal with my bow, but I guess you can't kill em from the couch. Glad I ended up going opening day. How's every one else's season been? Attachments:

If the cork got messed up beneath the cord somehow them you would have to redo it. Cork might be too soft to wrap it tightly and there might be some play in the wrap. I'de try it without glue just wrapping tight as possible for a few inches and seeing how it feels.
