I know its not our bait because we watch the bait tugs all night. And I know its not gar or turtles because the bait will be smashed but not cut in anyway. I throw a variety of bait and size from little 4" suckers to 1lb bass and everything in between (gills, shinners, chubs, sun fish...). I'm going to try some night crawlers next trip and see if I can catch any channels. The 7.5lb flat we caught the other night was full of eggs so they defiantly have started to spawn there.

I thought it could be channels but I've never caught a channel cat where we are fishing. That's not saying that there are not any in there but I don't think there are many because we've tried fishing for them with cut bait and liver and never catch any. Just flat heads.

also... the fish we caught last night was obviously full of eggs which leads me to believe that maybe these are spawning fish and not interested in eating just killing our bait.

Last 3 trips out I've had allot of bites and action but only caught a couple fish. The rod tips will bounce around a little but they dont go down like Id like them to. We'll wait and wait while the fish are messing with our bait then the bite will stop we real in our bait and the bait is crushed where a catfish has obviously had ahold of it. We've had this happen multiple times the past couple nights and I'm wondering if maybe the fish are spawning all ready and there just hitting our bait to kill it not eat it? Any pointers as to what I can do to get these fish hooked. I'm using 8o charlie brown hooks. I try to leave the rod in the holder and let them take it but it seams like once they kill my bait they're not interrested in it anymore. Should I try to set into them when they are messing with the bait, open the bail and try to feed them line (they don't pull hard enough to take anyline anyway really)? It seams to early for the spawn but the weather has been really hot and water temps are above 70. Any ideas???

Been out a couple more times but can't seem to get anything else to bite. I don't know if the river I'm in is big enough for large flat heads. Anyone familure with the walhunding river and if it has any decent size flat heads in it. I figured I must be in a ok spot catching 2 (small) flat heads in about 8 hours of fishing but havn't got anything since then.
Anyone fishing central ohio (or muskingum river) I'd like to go sometime with someone who knows what there doing. I'll bring the beer and the bait...lol

I've done allot of bass fishing and some pond channel cat fishing but I want to catch something big so I'm trying to catch some flat heads or blues. I've been fishing in the walhunding river in ohio that has logs and allot of cover. fished for 4 hours both sat and sun night and caught 2 flats (1-sat, 1-sun) both were under 10 pounds. My current setup is 2 berkley big game rods with abu 660 reels and was using 50lb spider wire (thinking of switching to 50lb mono). I'm running a 3-way rig with a 12" steel leader and 14" drop to a 3ounce weight (keeps the bait from staying on the bottom) and 6o circle hook. I have my clickers set with bail open so they can pick it up and run with it a little before I set. Does my setup sound right? do most people use 3-way rig or slip sinker rig in the river? Any suggestions? 2 small flats in 8 hours isn't allot but I think there spawning so I think I'm in a decent spot. Also: I'm using (live) blue gill, creek chub and gold fish for bait. both fish were caught on 6" blue gill.... I couldn't believe these small fish were taking such large bait!!! Attachments:
