Thanks! But it's teeth were a lot bigger and sharper than any smallmouth I've ever caught so I wasn't sure

Is this a perch? I'm not sure because I've never actually seen one before but it had small teeth

I have been fishing with ugly stik tiger medium action rods and abu garcia 6500 reels. I originally had penn squalls on the rods but took them back and got the abus and I am ten times happier. I like the medium action rods because I really enjoy fighting bigger fish on lighter tackle. Sometimes I even fish for channels with ultralight spinning combos. I also run circles often so I like the medium actions for the tip when fishing for channels, but the rod can handle any catfish I have caught so far. If I were to get a medium-heavy action, would it be ok to run circles for channels on? I am thinking of getting a heavier action for one reason only, to cast more weight a farther distance. With the medium actions I can cast a good distance with about an 8 ounce sinker, but not with big baits also. If I were to cast a heavy sinker, say a 10-12 ounce, with a big bait, I couldn't cast to the deep holes. I could with the medium-heavy but I'm worried about being able to run circles for channels too, since I like my rods to be able to detect the lightest bite, but fight the biggest fish. The reason for the amount of weight is the ohio river main channel current, lol. My 8 ounce sinkers don't do a thing in it. What would be a good reel to mount on the rod? I really like the 6500s but I need more line capacity if I'm gonna be casting that far and maybe hooking big fish. I can cast off close to my entire spool of 30 lb. monofilament with them. I would like for a reel to be as close to the abus as possible just with more line capacity. Sorry for the long post

Well welcome aboard, I never fished the ohio river. I use to fish the tuscarawas river until I got hooked on lake fishing. Now all I fish are the mwcd lakes. Good luck with the rest of your season. The fall bite will be hear before ya no it. I'm just glad the flatheads are done spawning lol

how do you use them for channels? Do you run them with the line alarm? Never fished that way successfully for channels no let the fish load the rod for them to work.myself im not a fan of circles for channels l myself use j-hooks for channel, seems like channels don't hammer baits like blues do I know to let them load the rod with circles, but do you also do it with kahles?

I just realized I still haven't even introduced myself here. My name is Morgan and I'm 15 going on 16. I have done a lot of channel cat fishing since I was a child, and this year have also gotten into the flatheads. I fish mostly the Ohio river in the wheeling area, up to Steubenville, and sometimes all the way down to the upper Mississippi river. I would really like to start fishing for blues but I have trouble doing so without a boat. Thank you guys for all the help you have already given me and the future help I'm sure you will provide!

I have the 6-8 ounce no roll and sometimes in the upper Mississippi the 8 doesn't even hold. I am going to invest in some heavier river or bank sinker molds here soon because of it. The 8 normally will do the job but some days the current is really moving down there

yea i have caught hundreds if not thousands of channels over the years on kahles. there is absolutely no disadvantage to using them for channels. i like to set my own hook so i prefer them over circles for anchor or shore. drifting for blues or channels i would use circles but in reality a kahle would work with no issues for that as well just not an instant hook up like a circle how do you use them for channels? Do you run them with the line alarm? Never fished that way successfully for channels

I used gamas for years with no complaints! I have heard that Gamas are good. Would the 8/0 from bd be big enough for big pieces of cut bait or live bait for flatheads? Or would I need to order bigger from somewhere else?
