Dave how far are you wanting to travel? The blues up here are just starting to get any size to them. I would suggest Portsmouth to Cincinnati. There are some giant blues caught in that stretch. Maybe Bassmassey will chime in. Hes got into them a little farther this way.

Yea i agree with kip. The fish in the meldahl and markland pool, portsmouth to cinci, are larger. However these pools are also the pools that kentucky has access to and commercial guys do take a ton of fish from these areas. The pools that border w. virginia have blues but size is limited. In the case of these pools, the numbers should be higher because they are protected. Steve douglas caught a monster out of one of the pools that borders w. Virginia. I believe it was a state record but since he didnt hold a w. Virginia license it did not count. Theres a video on youtube somewhere explaining the circumstance.
Good luck.

Sean, I saw the same video with Steve Douglas before as well. I also plan on heading down to the Ohio River for at least 1 good 3-4 day trip this year. I was wondering the same thing as to which pools would be better than others. How big a gap is the difference in numbers? And is the size difference in the areas only for blues or is it the same for flats? Never really fished the big river except for from the bank and had some success but nothing to brag about.

I only know what other people have told me/ what i have read about the pools north and east of meldahl. Hoopnets have had tremendous effects on the flathead population in our pool. Meldahl. However i do hear of people catching some monster flathead fishing under barges fishing for blues. I have heard that the pool above meldahl have a much better population of flathead. The river starts to slim down the further north and east you go. So finding fish will be easier for people who are unfamiliar with the river.

I have been down there twice with the flat bottom. First time we wore em out pretty good, the second trip not so much. Look under fish in reports for 12.9 & 12.11 I made a deport for each trip. This was fish in down near Racine & Gallipolis. The wvdnr has been stocked blues from 2005-2009 in the first 3 wv pools. There is a good shovelhead population too, I have gone down to the Racine pool and caught over 100# of shovelhead off the bank.

That's a good haul from cranberry.,..make sure you do your homework before you go. Look at the stream flows to see what the current is doing....and I would look at sattelite images/ navigation charts and get an idea on an idea on a stretch you wanna try. I know my first trip down the river was running about 60,000 CFS and I could anchor anywhere I wanted. The next trip I believe it was around 140,000 CFS and rising....that trip I was limited to fishing creek mouths and current breaks along the bank.
