What are opinions on the shimano charter special? Looked at the specs and it seems like it would be an excellent flathead reel. I run the penn squalls and abu 6500s. Should I go with the shimano or just another squall or 6500? Does anyone have experience with one?

Are you talking about the tl2000ld with leverdrag, 33#'s of drag and levelwind for 130? It seems like a bit much for so little cost. I read the reviews in bass pro shops. It all seems a bit "fishy" or maybe "unfishy". A Reel with all that, going so cheap has to have a lot of cut corners. I could be wrong though. I would find some reviews on multiple sites That are from "reel" people.

I think I am going to give the charter special a try, but It will be a big fish only setup. Probably will be a pole casted out with huge bait when I'm fishing for flatheads with my other set ups. What rod could I put on this? I was looking at the quantum big cats but they are 1 piece. I need two piece rods. I also don't really like inserts but I was going to make an exception. I'm looking for a really stiff rod to pull flatheads out of cover if needed. Something heavy action or m/h could work. Any suggestions? I also like to have reinforced stainless eyes but could possibly make an exception to that also

Why you need 2 piece rods? Just curious.

the charter specials are what Robby uses Katfish on here. those reels are about the most bang for the buck you can get. I use the non lever drag model and they are awesome

I use the non lever drag model and they are awesome you're talking about the tr200g right? If so they are great reels. If the charter special is the same but with lever drag I would definitely choose the charter special. I did message Katfish earlier today about them. I didn't realize that they had the same line capacity as the shimano tr reels

Here is a tear down and lube of the Shimano by the most well known reel repair guy in the business. alantani.com/index.php?topic=12.0 Notice at the bottom that after the reel is put back together it has a max drag of about 15#. This was a common practice for Shimano with there reels designed years ago. I can prove this statement if anyone questions it's truth. Any way, I wouldn't recommend any graphite reel be used beyond 15# of drag. I have used a Charter Special a few times, I had difficulty casting it. The 50# mono on the reel probably didn't help. Backlash city though. I haven't used the Charter Special enough to know how it would perform as a big fish reel. If you do go with the Shimano you might as well go with a matching Shimano rod. The Shimano Beef Stick BFBT66XHR is a 6' 6" solid fiberglass rod with stainless guides and no inserts. It is a beast. I have used the 7' version and I would say you could run over it with a truck and it wouldn't break. Best thing is they are dirt cheap. A 6' 6" rod will fit any just about any vehicle that has fold down rear seats. I've had several compact vehicles that I could get 7' rods in. Good luck with your choices.

sorry Morgan I dont trust or use any 2 piece rods for flatheads. i am with chuck though a beef stick is a nice short stout rod. also the shakespeare sturdy sticks used to come in 7ft and 6'6, that should fit in a car. I use 50lb mono on all flathead setups and havent run into issues casting personally, but each person is different

Morgan Shimano TR200G is basically the same reel as the Charter Special. It has a start drag system and the TLD has lever drag. At roughly half the cost it makes an economical choice for a flathead reel. The amount of drag is not an issue for me because I fish 30# test line. I doubt that very few 2 piece rods would withstand much more drag. Casting these reels takes good settings for cast control and a little practice. I don't cast baits very far because I don't want to stun them with a big impact with water or a 2 oz sinker hitting them. Finding the "best" equipment for your style of fishing often takes time and experimentation.
