I am looking to start back flathead fishing but don't want to catch the small ones, I want to have a reel that is very universal. For instance I want to be able to break the state record here in Eastern North Carolina which is currently 78 lbs., as well as breaking the world record blue catfish on which is 143 lbs., or go to saltwater with it and catch fish as well.
I have read catfish edge website and Chad Ferguson told there a ABU Garcia 7000 series is targeting trophy size flatheads.
Any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions are welcome.
Thanks, Blake

That seems like a lot to ask from a 7000 Abu... Penn Fathoms with their bronze main gearing and 30lbs of drag might be a better starting point. If you have your heart set on an Abu, an older Abu Alphamar (the black and blue ones) in the 16 or 20 size again would be a stronger reel then a 7000.

Thanks for the quick response, I just looked up this Abu Alphamar and I love that it already has a line counter, and it comes with a power handle. Plus not that price is a issue because I want a reel that will perform but it is a little cheaper than the 7000ICS! Also looked up the Penn Fathom and it is not bad either has 10 more lbs. of drag. Also seen a review of one when I googled it about someone catching a 120 lb. tarpon on it!
