Biologists have found that optimium temperature for gizzrad shad is 64.4 degrees.
You are really in luck because these studies were carried out for Indiana and Ohio.

A picture is worth 1000 words. This is preferred bait on the James River. Shad over 2 pounds are commonly referred to as cutters.

Them James River Shad do get big Kip and Robbie! Each time I go down there I want to bring a big cooler full home. But, never do. Would make good freezer bait, but as we know fresh is always better. Atleast IMO. rollo

Varmint That is a James Shad. The imense ammount and diversity of habitat on the James makes freaky big fish of many species. Their deer are tiny though ;D
I fished lots of places and haven't seen shad that size anywhere else.
Even skipjack herring caught on sabiki rigs don't come near that size.

The smallest shad on the james river I've seen is still far bigger than any shad I've seen up here.
