I was at Dillon Falls store and a gentleman brought in a fish and asked if it was a bowfin or a snakehead, having caught several bowfins in the past I could tell it was not a bowfin. I told him that I thought it was a Snakehead and that the ODNR would be interested in it. He told me he had already taken it to them and they said it was a snakehead. This fish was caught at lock number 10 of the Muskingum river (Zanesville). Just thought everyone would like to know. Attachments:

Thanks for the update. I watched a River Monsters episode on snakeheads and they are really invasive. I hope it's just one that someone released out of their aquarium and not from a breading population.

Why would the odnr have released the snakehead back to the person who caught it ? would you think they would take it and do test on it and some stuff to find out how or where it got into the river at? I'm not saying that this person did not take it to odnr just wondering why they didnt do something with it to learn more? I hope to god we can stop there thing's before they become like the silver carp in the Illinois river and take all over holly hell ........We need to KILL ever 1 we catch see or can get our hand's on this could really hurt us all if it get's outta hand

I don't believe its a snakehead. The snout is short like a bowfin and has a split anul fin, a snakehead has a solid anul fin. Also the dnr would have took it to study and what not. Snakeheads are a serious problem and there not taken that lighty.

Sure does look like a bowfin to me. The snakehead has a slope on its head where the bowfin is more rounded. Kinda hard to tell in the pic but the fin looks pretty round to me. Bowfin around here can look quite a bit different depending on the time of year. There is a federal ban against possessing or selling snakeheads that has been in place since 2002. So I would rule out it being an aquarium pet being turned loose in the river. If there had been some released prior to that I'm sure there would be reports of them before now. Them dang things will eat everything and someone would have hooked one.
