I saw the turtle town forum and I couldnt resist. Here is a 18 pounder I caught fishing a friends pond for channels. He was released unharmed in a local creek, he had quite a temper though. Attachments:

Awesome! I started this thread cause I love catching snappers! Looking for some album pictures myself. I usually jug fish them using deer meat for bait. I do relocate alot of turtles for people in the area that have farm ponds and want them removed... rollo

Do you use circles for snappers or some other hook?

I don't really target turtles I just catch them when fishing for catfish. I beleive the one i posted earlier was on a gama circle hook though. I beleive he swallowed the bait so any hook would have worked.

;D I don't blame you, I would rather swim back as well. You can see that I held the turtle above way out of reach. It's amazing how they can take live bait, we have had a few cases of that as well last year.

Alot of times if you catch a turtle and release him, not long after he will be back on your bait. Thats why i give them the knife if i catch one!

I anchored the pontoon one night off an island and had baits shallow and deep. A shallow rod clicker went off and when I set the hook I thought I had a record flathead.
Finally got it up and it was a huge snapper 40-45 pounds. Lifted it on the deck but it wasn't happy and as soon as I figured out we couldn't get along together on the pontoon I threw it back in and gave it the hook.
There are some nights that leatherbacks will go along our lines and eat all the baits unless we catch them. Most of the time we catch them in the foot. They put their foot on the bait and tear it apart. Sometimes they can eat a bait without making a click.
Varmint --count your blessings those turtles crawled back in. Long ago I would go midevil on softshells with a hatchet and they would crawl up in the brush. It took a long time to figure out what the ghastly smell was when we returned in the following weeks.
