Personally I don't like heavy rods for circles or any stiff rods as far as that goes. I use two ugly stik catfish series 8' rods. I have experimented with my other poles, tsunami air wave 11', mh ugly tiger 7'rod, 9' catmax, etc. And I feel that they work great when the fish were slamming the rods this summer, but I like the lighter rods for the coldwater bite. What ever gets you on the waters better than nothing.
Not proud of this next statement but .....the channels have been biting on chicken liver lately on the ohio river. We have been throwing shad, shrimp, skippys, but there only hitting liver. This is the first time I've used liver in 4 years. I hate the stuff, but it sure beats getting skunked. I'm fishing the meldahl pool right now and were running 3 to 4 feet high and its still on the rise.
Good luck this weekend.

Were up 7 plus feet now and its still going up. Normal pool level is 33.5 and were looking at 40.5 now. If you have a general idea of where your fishing this weekend you can google ohio river water levels and the first site that comes up is a usgs site. Select it and choose your location from the map, and you will see a graph of the water levels for the past week. I was hoping for a couple river trips this weekend as well, but we may have to chase some deep reservoir Channels or fish for crappies even.

thanks sean, yea we are going to give it a shot. monday tuesday wednesday. we fish a hole were the water level doesnt really seem to effect the fishing a whole lot. but typically not this cold, so we will see. it is in the marietta area and is where we have found a few blues in the past and are hoping they are in there this time of year as well.

I hate to say this but, The Ohio River is going insane right now and relief is not in site for a while. Our Normal Pool is 13.5 and it is headed to 42ft in the next day or so!!! I wouldn't waste my time, JMHO!!! Not for bank fishing, no way!
