In winter I often review fishing logs and old pictures. The other day I was looking through old 35mm pix that I had sorted out as bloopers. I found a few that had some value as teaching tools or oddities. I saved this picture to help demonstrate the effects of spawn shown by rub marks on the males. This picture reminded me that Seevers and I were goaded into enterring the Cripple Creek tournament by a young man who thought he knew a little about flathead. We ran our mouths hard while enterring and almost everything that could go wrong did that night. We managed big fish and got some money. Jim Corey was our friend but we still shamed him into throwing in 2 hats. We told him before paying our entrance fees to have everyone make checks out to us. ;D The worst part was that we both knew we were giving up 40-50 pound flathead to catch 30 pound flathead at Tappan. I guess that was just an old bull -young bull thing. For some reason I thought solid fiberglass rods would never be replaced by a superior product Turns out those heavy glass rods have been replaced. Every picture is worth 1000 words and some pictures bring out fond memories.

I was just sitting here at work waiting for midnight to finally roll around but after seeing Robbie's pictures it makes me think about all those late nights on the lake and makes me think about the sunlight coming up and the mist clearing on the lake...defidently happy thoughts just a shame we r still stuck in February!

I was kinda hoping for a drier start to this year, but so far little snow, and rain keeping the rivers elevated. rollo Water temps were 55 on some parts of the Tennessee River this weekend. I am no biologist but It looks like an early spawn. This year. We haven't been marking fish in the normal locations. I don't know if the heavy continuous current have them in the flats or if they have started moving up river to get ready for spawn. If the Flatheads have not went dormate. I'm hoping they will be pigs for the pre spawn bite. It don't look that many shad have died off this year.

I predict an early flathead season as well! Not much ice up north to plummet water temp.s for the late winter melt. I think if we get through this month with above average temps. You will see an early flathead bite!!! Maybe earlier than alot of guys will be out and about trying them! rollo
