I have heard of and seen lots of guys trimming the tails off their lively baits to keep them settled down... how many of you guys do this? To me this seems like a contridiction seems how flatheads hunt using their lateral line to pickup on vibrations emited by baitfish...i would expect a bait to be less effective using this method...does anyone have any thoughts on this?

What I have heard of this was trimming the fins would make the bait struggle more. I guess I could see this working. I know guys who do this. I haven't tried it myself. It's just my personal choice to try to keep the presentation as natural as possible. However, last year many times my bait would sit motionless for hours. If the same thing happens this year, I may pull out the fillet knife.

I have tried trimming large live shad, 10 inches or better. I was using them under floats and they were making some crazy tangles and knots in my line. Darn near cut their tails off, but they quit pulling my floats under and made less tangles. They eventually died in an hour or so and turned into cut bait. I've done it a time or two when live baits pull clicker when the tension knob is locked down, usually cuts their thrust down, but they still make plenty of vibrations trying to get away. Personally I don't like to do it because its a hassle, but when there's no other choice it works.
This spring I watched Kip fish a pound and a half quillback, carp looking fish, alive using a 10/0 circle hook. The fish would bend the rod but never load it. From that point on I used circle hooks with large live baits.....no clickers to go off, and no floats to get tangled.

Trimming bait, more often than not, only manages to kill the bait.

I wouldnt want a less lively bait. And I think a hook thru a baitfish is enough trauma. And I think Magis is rt. There are veins goin thru there tail that you dont wanna snip. Id rather have a lively bait all night than a struggling bait for an hour.
