As I get ready for my pursuit of chasing monster flatheads.ive been trying too collect some big baits, for the live stock tank. An I been using spring water, adding water every other day too keep cool. But been losing baits .ive lost alot of baits 2 times in 3 weeks. I'm thinking having bullheads in tank with smallmouth rock bass suckers an carp . Isn't good. Any input ?y

You have a good air supply Randy? If you have a lot of bait in a small tank, they will get over stressed and use more oxygen. Smallmouth are very sensitive compared to the other species of fish you mentioned. I imagine they are the first to die off.
Id start by looking at air supply and then look into getting a charcoal filter to remove amonia, scales, and other junk....frequent water changes help too.

If you are taking water out with a bucket and replacing it, you have only changed what good water you had, and replacing it.....leaving the bad. You need to syphon it out from the bottom to remove the ammonia and, the nitrates. These build up over time from the fishes waste and, from their natural breathing.

Small mouth and suckers are going to be the hardest to keep alive. Suckers are the first to go in my tanks. I have a deep freeze in the garage that I keep a pile of frozen water bottles in just for my bait tank. Promised my parents that I would not turn it into a bait tank when they gave it to me, but I'm not going to be able to keep my word much longer. I use two aquariums(45 &55 gal) and use air and filtration. Once August and July come they dont do very well.
Just one of the reasons I love Green Sunfish as bait. I had 10 gills and 10 greens in a bucket in the car the other day only a mile drive so didnt put air on them. Got distracted as soon as I pulled in the driveway. 4 hours later I ran outside to a very hot car to find 10 dead gills and 10 lively greens. But I figure most greens are smaller than your looking for.

i like greens in spring, but in the fall the bigger the bait the better.10 to 18in is ideal. helps keep smaller fish off the baits too because the squealers will be on fire right a long with the big boys
my tank drains from bottom i think i got a disease in there somehow.
