I'm hoping to catch my first flathead this year. been channel cat fishing for many years now and i do pretty well. but im looking to move up to the big league. ive made it my #1 goal for 2011. i dont even care how big, i just want to get my first flatty under my belt then focus on getting a big one. Where would be my best bet? not askin for anyones honey hole. i usually fish rivers and spillways. tusc river, bolivar, beach city,& dover dams.

The tusc is FULL of flats, but you will average in the 6 to 15 pound range, Ive fished the tusc for alot of years and my biggest was only 24.12 pounds out of the tusc, there seems to be more of a population of them farther south you go, anywhere between tusky and coshoton holds alot of flathead, look for areas with alot of wood and or big rocks, you will be surprised how many flathead eat crawdads, do NOT fish backwaters ive caught 90% of the flatheads out of the tusc in mild to low current. this should help, freshly cut bait and live bait is the best when the river is muddy i do better on the cut bait, due to flatheads using there smell and taste buds more than site, when the river is clear i opt for live bait.

Everything ducky said. I fish the Tusc from Dover to West Lafayette. I can point you in the right direction, but it all comes down to time on the water. I also average 5-15 lbers, but have caught a lot in the 20's and a few 30's from the Tusc. I know guys that fish the same places I do and never catch flats, so I think it's just putting in the time.

I fish WL to Coshocton a couple of times a year. I've seen (noodled) a couple of 30's so they are in there.

I am south of akron right by massillon, lived in ak-rowdy for a few years. Shoot me a PM with what your schedule is and you can come with us sometime and fish for flatty's. We do pretty well in the tusc and MWCD lakes and you are more than welcome to tag along if your interested.

Try the Muskingum River. There is a lot in the 10 to 40 pound range in the Mighty Muskingum.
