Most people are against floats for flatheads as they see it as a bottom feeder which isn't exactly the truth...I have caught some of my biggest fish under floats...anyone have any tips or pointers on better success rates with floats? We always use them off bridges with bigger baits more or less to mark the depth we r having success at...just average bank fishing we have problems keeping baits in a certain area if it's any larger than a bluegill... any ideas on how to keep bigger baits planted? This maybe could've went under rollos flathead thread but just was hoping to hear some discussion on running floats in lakes for flats specifically...

For deeper waters I use a heavy slip sinker 1-8oz below the baits to slow them down and keep them in line so they cannot swim up. In the shallows I use as little weight as possible so the baits can pull the float and move around more. Also I do different hook sets, the nose they swim down, the back swim in circles and the tail they go up till they tire out. Don't know if these are the best ways or not just how I do it. I run both of these setups in lakes and rivers. As far as floats I like the smaller size shark floats Dave sells they work a lot better than my pool noodle floats I made up they seam more balanced when casting. If your having problems keeping the bait in 1 spot let your sinker get to the bottom. The only problem would be if your fishing really deep water and want your bait up in the middle you wouldnt be able to cast it from shore even if it is a slip rig. There is a way I fish lakes with a non slip float but never tried it with big baits only smaller 3-5 inch shad. I cut how ever much line I want for the depth 20ft-50ft, tie a bobber on 1 end and the sinker/bait on the other, make a small loop in the middle and tie your main line to the loop and reel it all in like a V. With big baits it might end up being a mess PS I know this all didnt pertain to keeping big baits put like you asked I got off topic like always but maybe you can get some ideas from it.

I agree great info! Our noodle floats work pretty decent... we started using spray paint lids for the top and bottom so it fits down over and they work a lot better and are far more durable!

with the top flat like that isnt there a lot of resistance reeling them in?

Nah man you would be surprised how slick they are...not much resistance and it's incredible how much weight and how big of a live bait they will suspend... u really have never tried em?

oh yea we make em all the time. we drill out corks for each end run a straw through the center for a line guide. marine goop the cork in the noodle, then sand down the noodle to round it off or bring it to a point too cut back on resistance.

Oh that's cool Jordan...I've never had a problem with resistance personally...either way in my opinion it's better than the cigar floats you can buy...

Rcbbracing and Others What rigs/setups with floats do you use for flats? Just wondering the other ways you and others set them up?

I don't run anything special...I kinda learned by guess and check method didn't really have anyone to teach me...I run Bobber stop a small bead followed by a larger one and then the float...after the float I have my weight and a short piece of airhose to protect my knot and then a swivel a short leader and my hook...this similar to what you other guys run?
