Has anyone actually ever broke a brass swivel on a fish? I have yet to break a swivel period....snags, running tests, etc. Just curious cause I have heard guys say that they use special swivels, and I wanted to know if there was a reason for it, or if they just fell for a marketing ploy?

The barrel and 3 ways I have not that I can remember of. The brass ones with the snaps many of times the snap has broke or bent easily! But when fishing for Flats I don't take the chance either and I go with a better heavier duty barrel no sense in taking the chance on a fish of a life time for a few cents more

www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Crane-Swivels/product/7817/90285These are the exact ones I use. They are from bass pro and they say they are rated for 130+ pounds. They are called crane swivels, but are essential a barrel swivel. Now that I think about it, they aren't brass... but I do own a few that are. Are there other swivels out there that are cheaper made? I really can't see how I'd break these swivels.

Crane is one of the best brands you will be fine The cheap brass ones from Wally World is what I thought you where asking about. The hype you heard about the better swivels was probably the Crane Swivels that you are using I know Dave @ Bottom Dwellers Tackle caries the Crane's he might also be cheaper than Bass Pro

Thanks. That makes sense why they were so hard to break then. Lol. Thanks for the help. I'll have to look into stocking up from big dave in the immediate future.

I have always heard to stay away from the cheap brass swivels and agree for the slight price difference why not be sure. I don't run crane swivels but darn similar. I have a infisherman video I think its "flatheads day on the river" where doug stange even advises against brass swivels...but one thing is for sure...you are safe and I'm positive those swivels aren't going to be your weak link...lol

Spro makes some nice stuff. I use steel if i can find them. Brass is strong but soft.

I like the s-pro swivels too, that's what i currently have in the tackle bag...
the only brass ones i've ever had experience with are the walmart ones, and I don't like them........never remember breaking one, but I've pulled snags free and they've came back all mangled up so I quit using them. Bass pro brand off shore angler makes a good one too found in the salt water section of basspro.....

I used the cheap brass ones for years. Got a lot of them back out of snags all distorted. Broke a few of them using 50# mono. The crane and spro are both quality products I have used. Need to order some cranes from Dave.
