We've been bank fishing for a few years and switched last year to circle hooks a year and a half ago. I think I read on here that you guys are not using your clickers with circles. Is this right or not.

During the spring when the fish are short biting or mouthing the bait I'll run the clicker while using circles. As soon as the fish start slamming the bait I'll lock my rods down I'n a rod holder. While bank fishing we usually just use a piece of PVC with an angle on one end. We pound it I'n with a rubber mallet or if your fishing sandbars you can shove them right I'n. We make sure to back the drag off a little but I've never seen anyone lose a rod with this method.

NO CLICKER!
The key to circle hooks is to find the right rod with required backbone and a soft tip. From shore make sure you have a holder stout enough to no lose the rod. I have a video somewhere that explains it. I'll dig it up.

On those long cold nights in late fall early spring I have thought about running a loose drag, reel engaged, and running clickers. That way when the rod goes down and i'm dozing off the clicker will sound when the drag slips. It woulld take a little trial and error to figure out the right drag setting so that you get a good hook set on the load up.
We used to run clickers when running circle hooks with the reel in free spool, but we ended up missing to many fish. If you have patience and can control the urge to set the hook you would be fine.
As for rod holders we use pvc also, 1.5 inch at around 20 inches long. We then attach hose clamps and a foot and a half rod that has been sanded to a point. They work great and are easy to drive in almost any bank.
