I've done allot of bass fishing and some pond channel cat fishing but I want to catch something big so I'm trying to catch some flat heads or blues. I've been fishing in the walhunding river in ohio that has logs and allot of cover. fished for 4 hours both sat and sun night and caught 2 flats (1-sat, 1-sun) both were under 10 pounds. My current setup is 2 berkley big game rods with abu 660 reels and was using 50lb spider wire (thinking of switching to 50lb mono). I'm running a 3-way rig with a 12" steel leader and 14" drop to a 3ounce weight (keeps the bait from staying on the bottom) and 6o circle hook. I have my clickers set with bail open so they can pick it up and run with it a little before I set. Does my setup sound right? do most people use 3-way rig or slip sinker rig in the river? Any suggestions? 2 small flats in 8 hours isn't allot but I think there spawning so I think I'm in a decent spot. Also: I'm using (live) blue gill, creek chub and gold fish for bait. both fish were caught on 6" blue gill.... I couldn't believe these small fish were taking such large bait!!! Attachments:

fishin' is like alot of other things in life, it comes down to personal preference, what you're confident in, and what you have been shown to do. If you're catchin fish ya must be doin' somethin right. Your rig ain't quite what I like, but that doesn't mean it's wrong.......read what folks on here post up, fish with as many people as possible, then figure out what you like.
Might not catch alot of blues up there, ya probably need to get down to the ohio river for a chance at a fishable population of blues, unless you're joey6500, he got a good one out of z-ville pool couple years ago.
I don't think you would like the performance of 50# mono on a 6600......makes a good leader though. 30# mono should be plenty stout enough and you will still be able to throw it good.

Been out a couple more times but can't seem to get anything else to bite. I don't know if the river I'm in is big enough for large flat heads. Anyone familure with the walhunding river and if it has any decent size flat heads in it. I figured I must be in a ok spot catching 2 (small) flat heads in about 8 hours of fishing but havn't got anything since then.
Anyone fishing central ohio (or muskingum river) I'd like to go sometime with someone who knows what there doing. I'll bring the beer and the bait...lol

The walhounding holds some decent flats just have to spend some time there. As for the Muskingum the fish are starting to turn back on after the spawn. BassMassey caught 7 flats last night with some decent size. I fish at least 1 night a week and usually on the Muskingum. Get ahold of me next time ya wanna get out.
