high teck redneck.......i woulda never thought of that either..........that's pretty cool........how'd ya know the pump went out though? was it not peeing at all ? We were in a no wake zone in downtown Toledo and smelled smoke. Turned around and saw the smoke coming from engine and shut it off. My water tube up top is clear so you can see water if it's pumping and it was dry. Thought maybe thermostat stuck so popped it out and bone dry behind it too. 1 finger to the head and no doubt it wasn't getting water. Didn't even try to start it till it cooled down and I hooked up the bilge pump to it. I'm guessing the smoke was the oil starting to burn instead of lube. I got real lucky being in a no wake zone, had I been 100 yards down stream I would have had it opened up full throttle, and that would have been bad. The motor is a 66 chrysler 50 hp, no warning buzzer, no temp gauge. What sucks is I just changed the gears in the lower unit and the water pump looked good when I checked it. I only gave $600 for the boat and motor. I would have hated to ruin the motor. The boat is a 61 sea king, a little heavy but the motor pushes it along pretty good at 25 mph.

Congrats on saving the motor. Very ingenious way of getting water to the motor. Definately beats rowing back.
