I would like to hear all of your goals for the 2011 Catfishing season. One of mine would have to be to break the 50# mark on a Flathead, and another would be to see my dad and Luckeywade catch a couple monsters on the James. Also I would like to bust a 60+ on the trip as well.

You guys fishing lakes or rivers? It seems that alot of people beleive that flatheads are larger in lakes. Their arguement is something like: the current causes the fish to use more energy making thier matabolism higher and therefore they have to eat more to maintain body weight. Unlike lakes where a fish can lay dormant in his hole and feed at will. It makes sense to me that the larger flats would be found in lakes, but im no expert.

I believe Lake Flats do get larger as well. I havent spent enough time on the lakes to get them figured out yet. This year I plan to spend a little more time targeting lake flatheads. All my fish have came from the river. The Muskingum "River of the Giants". LOL!

I would like to catch a 40lb.+ flathead, but as many of you know I would rather see my grandson Colton hook into a big flathead and to feel the thrill of having a true river monster on the end of his line.

Do you have a boat smooth? Most lakes are over fished from easy access points and its almost necessary to use a boat to catch Flatheads. I have fished Rocky Fork Lake in Highland County for years and i have never caught a flathead out of there. I know that their in there because I have seen people catch them. It was so bad that a friend and I began calling the Flatheads unicorns because you had the same rate of finding a unicorn as you did catching a flathead. We went lake hoping for a while and found a nice lake that wasn't fished as hard and had immediate success. Out of 10 trips we caught Flatheads 8 nights, not too bad compared to dozens of trips on the other lake with no Flatheads. Usually I look for structure in 4-12 foot of water (the larger the better) , look for a good food supply (bluegills or shad), a nice place to feed like a beach/flat/Rip rap adjacent to the structure, and if all requirements are met i spend a couple of nights fishing that spot. If i don't catch anything i move to other structure. I'm no expert but this is the equation I have found to work on lakes.

I fish both nearly equally but leaning towards lakes. That is only because the MWCD lakes and some others are closer to me than the mighty muskingum. Lakes are harder to target them but once you find a good spot it seems to keep producing. My PB was a river fish though on a king kahle full of night crawlers believe it or not.
I have however seen the biggest flats I have ever seen in person come from lakes. Makes sense to all they would need to do is sit and wait for something to pass by, nab it, and settle back in and get fat. Which in my opinion is why they are harder to target. I dont think they are on the move nearly as much as river fish.
Kind of like comparing a office worker to a marathon runner. no offense meant for either of the above

My goal is to try to learn something new every time i go out. i would love to get a 40lbs. flat and it is very achievable in the lakes i fish but i find myself resorting back to places i know i can catch fish but with limited size. i need to gamble a little more on ideas that i think can work rather than what i have had success on in the past but not the desired results.
