I always preach patience for big flathead but this year has been tough on me. Plenty of skunks and a few small flathead had me questioning my abilities. But Friday the heavens openned up and after a flash flood I set out in search of big flathead once again. At 56 pounds this massive female fits in the size frame for the fish I am truly seeking to catch. The rain raised the lake level 1 1/2 feet in a matter of hours. I hope the rainy spell extends into next week so I can have a good shot at more flathead.

That fish was 49 inches long! If I caught a female longer than that I can't remember her.

All but one of the flatheads I have caught this summer are females. This is completely opposite of what normally occurs after spawn.
I cannot understand this reversal of flathead locations. We do know that the male flathead have to be more aggressive and feed harder post spawn. They seem to have found a more preferable set of spots to find food.
This is just another variable for me to ponder during the long winter.
