OK y'all I got a few questions. I have been running large live shad and bluegillls on a 10-12" leader on the bottom. I have caught a few but I have lost more than i have caught. The ones i have lost were really nice fish. What am i doing wrong. I let them take the bait for an adequate amount of time due to the size of the baits. I am running 30lb braid with 5/0 circle hooks and 1 1/4 weights. I am fishing in the Mississippi river. Please any advice will be helpful. Also i fish alone because i cant find anyone to put in the hours or effort. Whats the easiest way to get these monsters in the boat?

Maybe use a little larger hook for more hook gap. Are you allowing slack I'n the line while fighting the fish? Sometimes you can do everything right and still lose a fish. It's called bad luck?

Kip said it right! Sometimes it's just bad luck. Switching to a bigger circle hook might help, 8/0 or 10/0 bottomdewellers circle will probably do the trick, let them load up the rod and start realing. Let us know how it turns out.

May have some answers tonight depending on the weather. Calling for thunderstorms but may head out after them for a bit.

I would try upsizing your hook to like an 8/0 or 10/0 t make sure there is enough hook gap to let the point set into the fish this was what i said in your other thread, i would stick with mono though if it were me unless you have 100yd hooksets

I am switching to braid due to the amount of brush and other snags in the area. I have bought larger hooks as y'all said. I am going out saturday night to try it again. hopefully all goes well.

braid does not hold up as well in brush., rocks or snags of any kind it tends to rub on stuff and start to fray;
mono is much more abrasion resistant and doesnt cut off on rocks and stuff nearly as easy

How are you hooking your baits also? I've seen folks over the years hook baits too deep resulting in less gap, and or resulting in not good hook sets or hooking back into the bait..... rollo

Well the larger hooks seem to work. I got my gf to come out with me last night and we caught a few. She was dead set on using her shakespears open face. Which is cheaply made and hooked into about a 6lbs flat. Was a fight for her due to the current and inexperience she has. She loved it though her eyes lit up when she could barley move the fish hahahaha. I dont know how many times i heard her say " this thing is huge i cant get him in". I am hooking my baits through the upper jaw so the swim straight and stay close to the bottom. I only lost one last night due to me setting the hook too soon. Thanks for all the advice everything has helped.
