Let's discuss our choice of catfish line. I prefer Berkley big game 40lb. Mono (green or solar), and I also like Mason big cat 63lb. Braid. What do you like?

At the beginning of last year I used 25lb big game, but I kept hearing stories of people losing fish and I made up my mind that I needed to get some sturdier line. A friend told me about a new co-polymer line called silverthread. He told me that it would be more abrasion resistant than monofilament. I have been using it for a few months and I have had no problems with it. (Its only 30lb test) I still find it hard to believe that people use anything over 30lb test. Its darn near impossible to break that stuff, there has been several times where i though that i was going to break my pole trying to get out of a snag. I have even wrapped a bottle up in the line and walked backwards to break it, and most of the time I still have to cut my line. As long as you tie good knots 30lb test is all you need. I also understand that big flats and blues can rough up your line with their rough patches, so a leader of stronger test is acceptable. Other than that I see no point in huge line.

I really like Vicious Mono, but I use 40lb Big Game Solar, it is much cheaper than Vicious and I have no broke it on a fish.

Heavy cover I like #100 spiderwire stealth with a #80 mono leader. For distance casting I go with #65 braid and a #60 mono leader.

For my flathead setups I use 100# greenspot dacron or mason big cat. On my channel setups I use 20# Berkley big game. I have never had an issue with getting broke off on the big game.

I run 50 pound seguar or ande mono with a 60 to 80 pound mono leader. Some say its overkill but I'm not going to lose that fish of a lifetime due to breaking my line.

I run Big Game mono 40 and 50 pound test for most situations fishing the rivers. On my other setups for lake fishing I am running Power Pro 65lb. and Fireline 65lb. tracer braid. I prefer the castability braid offers with lower stretch on the lakes, but prefer mono over braid on the rivers when dealing with alot more structure. And to be honest, alittle bit of stretch that monofilament lines offer when dealing with heavy structure, isn't a bad thing! rollo

I use 20# Big Game on channel cat rigs and have caught flats up to 52 on it.
I use 30# Big Game solar on the James river. Landed lots of blues 40-77 pounds.
I use dacron braid for flathead. My favorite is Cortland greenspot 36# but becoming more difficult to find and pay for. I've been substituting Cabelas prestige. Dacron is such high maintenance line that I don't reccomend it for most people.

I'm thinking about getting the abu c3, 6501 I think it is for lefty's. Line capacity is 245 yards of 14#. If I go with 30# mono you think it would still hold enough to fight a big flat?

Well the dacron is soft and will flatten into itself. You can detect nicks in mono by running it through your fingers but you have to visually check dacron braid. 36# braid is chancy for 40+ cats so one little roughed up spot spells disaster.Dacron will mildew and rot and mud sticks to it.
Unless you set baits at long distance and can't stand mono stretch, you are better off with mono. Superbraids float and become a pain in lakes without current to sink it.
