I have several big spinning reels that I like to use for flatheads, only one has a baitrunner though which is a shimano 6500. The bait runner works just like a clicker on a baitcasting reel, just not as audible. That shimano is top of the line......actually has a drag system just for the clicker which is pretty cool, although there are quality baitrunner reels for cheaper I've just never owned one so I can't tell ya alot about them. You don't see alot of catfishers using big spinning reels, but I love mine on a 7' penn slammer.....I just don't like to let my fish run anywhere but the boat.

Thommie Most flathead fishermen rely on levelwind reels because of their large capacity and designed strength. Some years back I carried baitrunners as back up reels on flathead trips. We drop our baits from a boat before dark, but if I caught a fish or lost a bait, I would pull out a baitrunner and cast a bait out. I could lob a live bait out and cause less stress than casting it out on a baitcast reel. My largest flathead with the baitrunner was 61 but I would have had much more control of the fish with a baitcaster. I never want to discourage anyone from flathead fishing but I always hope to explain the options as accurately as possible.

Thommie, you ask 10 catfishermen a question you might get 10 different answers. Let me tell ya, a 6/0 spinning outfit holds plenty of line and is sure as heck stout enough to catch any flathead that may bite your bait. Besides, you fight and control a.fish with the rod anyway. So use what youre comfortable with and hope you catch some good ones!
