I was wondering if anyone has had any luck yet. The water temps have been over 50 a few times but I still have not generated any bites. I've been fishing for channel cats at one of my favorite off shore spots for the past couple weekends with no luck. I havent ever fished for them early spring so if anyone has any early season tips feel free to share them. Also What is the best bait to use early? Last year I didnt start fishing this spot till around august and had some awesome nights slaying cats all the way through october.

they are biting. we caught 2 small flatheads last night and a 10lb channel. the big channels are on fire right now. live blue gill is what we used. but cut gills will work too i am sure

Jason the water is high. we were catching them on shallow flats on the inside of the bend where the water eas slack. you could see bait fish moving around on the flat all night. they werent super aggresive yet. i would listen for a clicker to roll. then click it off and thumb the spool a little so they could kind of free spool once they moved off the flat i would hammer em.
the flat was actually where we normally fish but water was probably 6ft high or better i would say

Nice. Are you using the blue gill on a bobber? If so how far down are you putting them!

Last couple of weekends I have caught a few channelcats in the day in the shallows on nightcrawlers. Catching them at deer creek. Hopefully the shad will start moving soon so I can start using them. That is a great time also. When the shad swim up the creek to spawn, the fish will be all over them. And also when they hatch, they get mauled coming out of the creeks back to the lakes. Thinking about going tomorrow, depending on the weather. The channels should really be turning on in the lakes soon. Wanted to do some flathead fishing tomorrow night, but looks like they are calling for thunderstorms. In my earlier years I may not have minded that, but I don't think I could take a lightning strike now.....lol

Haha well at least your catching some. I may try night crawlers next time I go. The area I'm fishing is a channel that transitions into open water. It is U shaped kind of and I'm not sure wether to cast deeper or more shallow. Idk if the fish aren't using the channel yet or if I'm using the wrong bait or what? But I'm confident that we'll start getting on them in a week or two.

Also I wish I had a good flathead spot... But I'm stuck with channels and little mud cats for now which I'm fine with.
