I ain't fished for cats in over 20 years, so I'm a little rusty. Was wondering if you more experienced, up to date guys might help an older guy out with some info? My youngest son (18) is showing interest in cat fishing, so I would like to keep him interested in it if at all possible. I am including a image in this post of an area that I think will produce some flat heads...but being rusted up as I am, I would like to get some of your opinions on this area that I have circled on the map shown below. The water in the bay of the circled area ranges 0 feet at the bank to 10 feet right at the creek channel edge and the creek channel drops to 12-17 feet. Do you think this area would be a good spot to try? It is easily accessible in a couple of spots on the shoreline and at the old highway that is underwater. The old highway is lined on each side with rip rap. There are a good number of crappie stake beds and brush piles on the flats and there's several areas that have rip rap. I do have a 14 foot, 42" wide bottom jon boat but I do not have it rigged for cats or night fishing at the moment. ( it's my crappie boat), so our fishing time will be from the bank for the time being. What would be your tactic or method to fish this area? Tell me what ya think about the area circled or if ya see another promising area on the map, let me know. We appreciate any and all help. Thanks and happy fishing!

Sounds like you have everything you need to be a great flathead spot!

Thanks Smoothkip. I figure to try it with live gills or shad.
Any suggestions on how to fish this area? cork, bottom, etc....

Sounds like a great spot, preferably I would like a little shallower water, I like fishing 4 to 6 foot flats with 6 to 8 foot channels during spawn and prespawn. That spot may get better when flathead stop spawning and may be very good in the fall. But sounds like its worthtrying a couple nites now. I would use your crappie boat to drag baits out to the channel and a few in the channel. Good luck.

I always like to use a float in the rivers when it's a calm enough eddie. I try to set it a cpl feet off the bottom. If not really calm just fish bottom. Good luck!
