I am in the market for a new harness this year for hunting season. Any suggestions on which one to get? I saw that Hunters Safety System has a model harness for under $100, it's the TreeStalker. Anybody know anything about this model?

I don't know about that particular model, but one thing about HSS harnesses is that in my opinion, they're a PITA to get hooked to the tree. The tether included requires threading the strap through the buckle, in the dark using both hands after wrapping it around the tree. It's a horrible design. They do offer a rope tether, for another $20. I also don't like how the HSS vests cover up my coat pockets. I'd look at all brands and don't forget to look at the tether system. Being fast and easy to hook up in the dark is very important, but easy to forget about until you're in the tree. I have a Summit SOP (rope tether)and I like it fairly well, but there are other good harnesses.

I love my hss I do have the rope tether though. Mike you should be able to unsnap the cloth vest off the actual body harness, at least I can on mine.

I picked up a HSS Ultra-Lite. It's black and not camo but it's the thin strap style and not the vest. It was on sale so I went ahead and picked it up. I haven't had a chance to mess with it much yet but I still have 30days to return it if it doesn't fit or if I decide on another one. What I don't like is that you're not able to try on different styles. They are all packaged real tight and you cannot open them in the stores.
I use a climber and hunt public land so I move around to different trees a lot. Aren't the rope tethers more for permanent tree stands and you leave the tether in the tree?

No, the tether goes with you. It's just a rope you throw around the tree with a loop and a sliding prussic knot. It's very easy to do in the dark, which is why I much prefer it to the straps. You may be thinking of a lifeline. Those stay in the tree and you clip to the prussic knot and slide it up the rope as you climb. I have 5 of those, and if possible I set up a stands so I never have to unclip from the lifeline. Makes it easier and safer. Plus, I don't have to worry if I forgot my tether back at the house. I've done that more than once.

The few times I've ever used harness I used the permanent style hunter safety system vest. Tough using them with a climber
