Amanda and I took the kayaks out to a local creek Tuesday evening. We met up with Russ and Wes and hit the water. We were targeting bass but the highlight of the evening came when we were dragging our kayaks up a riffle. Amanda, Russ, and Wes made it through the riffle and started paddling when I saw this. At first I told Russ that I had saw a 10-15 pound flathead sitting in the shallows. I could tell that it had some scars on its back, probably caused from spawning activity. I picked up the camera and started recording. As I got closer I quickly realized the flathead catfish was much larger than any 15 pounds. This fish was every bit of 40" long and in pretty rough shape. (I'm guessing it at a solid 30lbs.) It was sitting out of the current recovering from spawning. Given the water temperatures I assume this flathead will spawn several more times. He swam off after becoming famous, hopefully to make some more flathead babies for me to catch. lol

Apparently I almost stepped on it and never had a clue. Suddenly I hear Sean say "hey any of you notice the giant flathead you just walked past". Should have been wearing my polarized sunglasses. Definitely livened up a slow and rainy trip. Too bad it didn't go nuts and soak Sean like I was hoping! Sent from my MB886 using proboards

My reasoning is that during mushroom season you guys are 3 full weeks behind.....because of soil temps. It shouldnt be much different for water temps. Yet it seems that the flathead which are a hundred or two hundred miles north of us are spawning at the same time. Just something to ponder I guess. Thanks guys. Sent from my SCH-I545 using proboards

There is not many spawning fish in the mwcd lakes yet, were been catching one every nite out, only one over 40. And only one has had spawning marks.

I always believed moon phase has a lot to do with spawn. This year that does not seem to be the case here. Very few marked up fish so far. Water temps has been right around 77 to 80 for weeks now. I think it is close, and I know there is a few fish spawning right now. But fortunately I dont think the majority has yet here. Soon very very soon.

Im not really sure what I beleive whether its water temps, moon phase, or a combination of the two. The only thing thats certain is that....there is no clear cut way to determine when the spawn occurs. Its only when you see a fish that shows evidence of spawning can you say for sure that they have started spawn. Another thing that I have learned is that if im not catching them. ..it doesn't mean that they are spawning. I used to think that but I have been wrong time and time again. We have to remember not all fish spawn the same time in the same lake, I fished a lake two nights ago where the water temp was 5 degrees warmer on the shallow end. I fished the dam end, in a bay that has produced over the years. I caught a flathead but he was not picture worthy.

Sean I am starting to think think it is a combination of moon phase and water temp. There is just to many other creatures in this world that relies on moon phases to determine their life cycle. I believe moon phases has a huge part in most animals.
