I'm going to head out to do a little flathead fishing Saturday in a local lake. Last I checked the water temp was in the upper 40's, I know thats still a little cold, but I'll try it all the same. Last year I lost one while jigging a nightcrawler under a float near submerged timber about this time of year. I was using 6lb test in hopes of catching some nice bluegills, my mistake. I am going to head out to the same spot and give it a try with heavier tackle. Obviously I'll use nightcrawler on a float again, but what should I use on my second pole? Cut bait or worms? Float or on Bottom?

Early Flatheads.. We catch them on the river in spring on cutbaits. Shad, chubs, suckers seem to be goog baits as the water warms. My advice for fishing this early is still use smaller, slender pieces of cuts, and move throughout the area you intend on fishing. Jigging smaller tipped jigs are good like you said! rollo

I arrived at the lake 10:30am Saturday morning, the water temperature was around 48 degrees. The water temperature was 58 degrees by the time I decided to leave at 6:30pm. I fished nightcrawler under a float about 12' deep near a fallen tree with one pole and bluegill head and nightcrawler on the other, which sat in about 25' of water at the top of the fallen tree. I didn't manage a flathead but I caught a little channel, 6 trout (which had seemed to carry over from last year since the lake hasn't been stocked this year yet), 6 largemouth bass, and 7 bluegill. (One of which was sacrificed.) I was glad to get out and get some lines wet, it won't be too much longer before spring is in full swing.

I would have liked to caught a flathead or a large channel, but for as early as it is I was happy. The trout were really going crazy, a guy came by in a bass boat and said he had caught 7 or 8 on a large crankbait. Next time I'll hook a trout up and use him for bait.
