Early spring can bring some awesome flatheads. Bait choice can vary, but cut shad. Chubs. Are my choice! I usually target feeder creeks, and places they can move up during the daylight hours that water warms quickly. Do you target early spring flatheads? If so.. How? Tell what you look for... If you haven't, you may want to try... They can be very active after a long winter!!! rollo

Plan on trying early flats this year. Sis had me stock up on propane for the cooler nights aboard the pontoon.

I look for flooded flats and creeks out of the current. crrek chubs are my go to, but a 3 to4in bluegill can be productive too.

I've always fished deep and moved a lot earlier in the year trying to drop a bait in front of their faces. I will try shallower/warmer feeder creek areas this year like you mentioned though. That's normally where I'll target channels early season.

I need to investigate the old day time fishing thing more... im a 7pm-midnight kinda guy. I bet dawn til 9-10am would be worth trying, especially in the spring when the hot summer sun comes out in the mornings.
Ususlly, March-mid April ill try deep rip rap below our dams. Then by mid-late April start trying shallow warm waters, and large creek mouths, and upstream until it starts to get shallow.
Figure, theyre goal is to get their metabolism kick started... so they need 2 things: Warmth & Food. You would think they would hit the tributaries and start looking for small, easy meals like crayfish and minnows first thing as it starts to get warm.

I like to fish in bottle necks areas in early spring where i no traveling flathead will have to pass through from main basin water to get to shallow bays. This can be bridges, neck downs from points on opposite sides of the lake come close together and even creek channels that come from main basin water to shallow bays. I tend to fish a little deeper in early spring 6 to 9 foot. Some may think that's shallow but during prespawn and spawn i typically fish 2 to 6 foot. I guess im more of a shallow water guy. I've noticed over the years i typically don't catch as many big flatheads as some guys but i usually catch a lot more than those guys with a few good fish mixed in. I guess that's just the style i prefer and am confident in.
