I spent some time in the past on the bass cicuits, No matter where I went people where always the same. They were friendly in the parking lot but, if you tried talking about about strategy or what the bite has been lately they would give ya dirty looks and walk away. And while on the water, Don't you dare get your boat too close.
As my travels have taken me to many new new places this year and last I've met alot of new people. And I haven't met a single catman who wouldn't go out his way to help someone out. Go fishing with a catman and he'll tell ya it doesn't matter if he don't catch anything, he just loves to be there. I've been down with kip and rollo and luckywade and some others. And had trips I will remember forever. And I'm sure they will too.
This Spring I've had a few mishaps that have shown the true nature of the catfish community. Before a tournament I was fishing, Kevin Hicks who owns Katfish Kandy LLC, Had some extra Shad and was passing them out. He wasn't doing it to advertise. He never even mentioned he sells shad while he was passing them out. He was just doing it to help others out. Even though he was also fishing in the tournament. Later that night in the fog of the night I lost track of the river and ended up in a flooded marsh area and bottomed out my 26 foot pontoon in 6 inches of water. I was about 100 yards from the river channel. I gave Jason Stanfield a call who runs the Northern Ohio Catfish Tournament Trail. He dropped everything in the middle of a tournament to come help me out. He was only able to make it about 50 yds in. After some ingenuity he got the rope and with hasitation or regard for his own boat, tried everything he could to pull me out. He ended up clogging his motor and took care of it himself without an ounce of regret. If it would of cost anything I would have gladly taken care of it.
Then on a different trip up to the Maumee river to fish with Brittan Battles and Charles Luck the incident happened after the trip was over. I set my backpack down beside the truck that contained 95% of my terminal tackle and healthy supply of hiking supplies and survival necessities. I ended up driving off and forgot it alongside the road. After an entire day of depression and anger and then more depression I finally sat down to write a quick story on this site about the trip. I had accepted the fact it was gone. Shortly after the story was posted Robby Robinson posted a reply that a fellow catfisherman from the area had found it and was looking for the owner. I can not tell you the joy I felt in that moment. It was kind of like the bite of a monster catfish. After Some back and forth communicating with Matt G of the Flathead River Rats my stuff is now back home.
These are just a few of the stories of the millions I've heard of the things that a catfisherman would do for anyone. I hope noone is mad I used their names. I feel these people need to be recognised for their standards and humanity. This is one of the biggest reasons why I Catfish. I love to fish. But If I can't share this love with the world then it wouldn't be as fun.
Special thanks to everyone in the catfish community.
