I haven't been to my camper much this year. So I've been doing some traveling and some local fishing close to home. Charles mill is just a ten minute drive for me, I've got in-laws that fish there frequently. One in particular fishes tournaments that are held there often. His claim is that most of the fish he catches are blues. I didn't want to be rude but I had to tell him there aren't any blues in there. He said at one of the tournaments he had a 10 pounder that would have been big fish but they wouldn't let him weigh it claiming it was a blue and that wouldn't be fair to everyone else with channels. Now, wether it really was a blue or not i don't know. or maybe the guy running it realy didn't know the difference and was calling it a blue based on color, I don't know.
Then the other night I couldn't find a partner so I decided to go hit the spillway. When i got there, there seemed to be quite a few people already fishing. So i wondered around talking to people to see what's been biting. As i passed one guy he said that a gentleman had two twenty pound blues on a stringer. I made my way over to the gentleman and struck up a conversation first about fish in the area. He said he catches blues everytime he's out and always big ones around 20 to 25 pounds. I jokingly said "come on, there's no blues in here." So I asked him how he knows there blues? He said they are light grey with very white belly's. He said he had a couple on a stringer. He pulled them out and said these are close to the weight he usually catches but just a bit smaller. he said these are blues and weigh about 20 each.
The whole time I was trying to be as polite as possible and not make him mad. Trying not to offend him, I said these are neither blues or even close to twenty pounds. But as people seen them they started to gather around. I asked if I could show him the difference between a channel and a blue. I showed him and the others around how the anal fin had quite a curve to it. And I said if your not sure to count the splines in the anal fin. I said if it has less than 30 it's a channel, any more it's a blue. I looked it up on my phone and showed him on the internet.
I then said these are nice fish but not 20's. I was still trying to be polite and teach him to be a better fisherman. I don't know if he actually thought they were 20's or if he knew they weren't and just told everyone they was, but he got a little upset at that and when i got out the scale he seemed kind of reluctant to weigh them. But when everyone else wanted to see the real weight, he gave in to the peer pressure and let me weigh them. The first weighed 9 lbs 10 oz and the other was only 9.1. After that I carried on down the bank cause he seemed realy upset about it. And one of the bystanders came up and asked to read the articles about the difference between the two. While reading he said that that guy was there alot and always says they are blues and claims the fish he catches are 20 pounds or bigger.
Does Anybody else run into similar situations or Know if there really are blues in Carles Mill?
