Hi guys, I haven't posted for a while, but I'm struggling. I have been trying to catch some channels in the winter and I cant. I don't know what to do. I found the deepest hole within an hour of me, and I went there. I fish the ohio river. I had four rods out, with small j-hooks, small pieces of bait, and I engaged the reels and kept the lines tight. I had two VERY subtle bites, but didn't catch either fish. I don't know how to fish for channels in the winter, and I need some tips. I don't know what rig to use, what kind of hooks, what bait, types of places to fish, and if I should tight line, disengage the reels etc.... Any help would be very appreciated, thanks

Well morgan your not the only one struggling. With channels its not about the deepest hole. Start with a sharp hook. I use a 4/0 with a thin wire gauge in the winter. A soft cut bait Preferably creek chub or similar. A slack water area about 10 feet deep or so. Little or no weight is best. Channels are very finnicky and will drop anything that doesn't feel right. I prefer free spool but stay close because they will run and drop before you can set the hook.

I've increased my odds using braid during the soft bite in winter. Tight line and the slightest bump I put the rod in my hand with my finger on the line. Bass rods or something with a very sensitive tip helps also.
