I am gonna try using more circle hooks this year and was curious. I know with a j style hook you lose some Control with a longer leader... does leader length matter at all while using a circle hook? I don't think it'd matter either way but figured someone would know for sure...thanks!

It shouldn't make any difference when using circle hooks. Any slack will be taken up slowly by the fish.

Agreed, leader size shouldn't matter for a circle hook. Just adjust your leader to the conditions your fishing. Just curious but, what are you fishing for with circles? I absolutely hate circles for flatheads. Missed a lot of fish on circles, mostly becuause its hard for me not to set the hook when the clicker is screaming. I only use cirlces during the day when I lock my reel down and let the fish set the hook itself.

Late last year Sean we started using circle hooks on the river for Flatheads. I was 6 for 6 on Bites with circles. We use pieces of Pvc about 3 foot long and drive them into the sand or gravel on the banks of the river. We lock our reels down and back drag of a little so it slips before touching the water. All fish were hooked deep in the corner of there mouth. I caught a 48,32,25,23, and a few smaller ones using this method. Im gonna try it again this year also. Attachments:

At night its kinda hard to see when my pole starts to bend, so I have no idea when I'm getting a bite. Thats the reason I don't do it. Do you add a light stick? Leave the clicker on? I'm not opposed to trying it again, especially since you have had luck with it.

If you can fish with a tight line, reels engaged, and rods secure then circles are great. They aren’t well suited for fishing in lakes unless fishing vertically. Not that they can’t work, but you have to know that the fish is going to swim away from you. That’s seldom the case in a lake.

I tape a glow stick on the end of my rod. Green is best and easiest to see from a distance. Get them at any craftstore for a dollar or two a tube. As mike said about swimming away is a good point. I have been lucky for all the fish I caught took the bait and moved off hooking themselves. There certain instances in rivers that this setup might not work as well either. I fish a spot that's a deep bowl about 25 foot hole, the fish always pick the bait up from the other side and take it into the hole. Circles are not good here because they are swimming toward you and never commit. I miss a lot. Of fish here due to setting the hook to early in fear of gut hooking fish.

leader length does not matter when using circles, although I beleive it is important to snell a circle hook.....
when santee drift fishing it is common to use leaders up to 7' long.........usually around 4foot though..........i like to drag a a few rigs at different leader lengths to see what the fish might like better...........
