Hi all, I have a Hurricane Mako reel and can't seem to get it to cast more than 10 feet or so. It always cast left like the brakes are set too tight. I have the brakes released as much as possible and have taken the reel apart and lubed everything up so all should be good. I'm at a loss so any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm not familiar with this reel, hadn't even heard of it before now. So it's hard to know exactly what is causing the problem. A couple of things to check are bad spool bearings, if it has spool bearings. It may have bushings. The line guide pawl on some reels has to be adjusted. The spool tension knob could be too tight. You should have just a small amount of play between the spool and the reels frame. Hope this helps. Chuck.

Has it always did this or is this something it recently started doing? I had trouble finding your reel , but i did. It's a 2 Ball Bearing trolling combo. If it's still new and does this since you bought it, then I'd say either return it or Keep practicing with it til your use to it. Are you loosening the drag star or the actual spool tension knob? Not sure if that's a clicker on the side, If so something in it may be dragging. If you've been using it a while and this is something new, then chances are some dirts in there somewhere. or one of your gears is loose, or the worm gear and line guide are dragging. Just a few possible suggestions to check out.

Also how much weight are you trying to throw? Typically you are going to want a decent weight on a trolling reel. 3 to 4 ounces minimum until it's adjusted properly.

I looked at a trolling maco reel and looks like the level wind hooks over top of a guide , I am thinking 10 ft behind the boat and then let out all the line you want to drift or troll is way this reel is made to work I doubt you ever going to be able to cast any distance with it , out of me boat I use abu 7000 and 6500 reels they cast purty good but bank fishing when i want distance i use Alvey reels on surf rods
