Does anyone use straws when fishing floats? I used to fish without them because they are a hassle to carry. Recently I started fishing with larger live baits and I feel it is highly important to use straws to keep the bait from swimming in your line as it sinks. What's your opinions?

After the knot and bead on a float set up some people tie on a straw. After the straw then follows the float, egg sinker, tube or bead, swivel, leader, hook. It looks like a straw with a round Styrofoam ball at one end. Here is a picture of what one looks like, I used one to measure a smallmouth. Attachments:

You need a bigger straw for that piece of live bait lol good idea might help with the bullheads tying knot's in the line?

;D He didn't make the bait bucket. Some people would absolutely die if they heard I used a 2 pound smallie for bait.

We rarely have problems with the baits wrapping. However, it has. Alot has to do with getting slack in your line after dark. I have more problems with using a long leader under the slip-float than anything. I prefer most of the time a straight rig under the float consisting an egg sinker, to a bead, then hook. If I use a barrel swivel, I keep it short. Float fishing can be tough especially after the sun goes down for sure... rollo

I take 170lb wire push both ends through a egg sinker to form a small loop when pulled almost all the way through then I push the 2 ends up through the straw. I get styrofoam looking tear drop bobbers from the craft store that slide on the straw. I put a bead over both wires @ the end of the straw and T off the wire. Then I put swivles on the ends of the wire for a two hook rig. Forgot to say I use the straws that are used for the small hellium balloons they are about 2ft long and stronger than the candy straws. Hope this helps ya.

If you have enough rod/reel outfits, dedicate one or two to fishing floats and spool them with a floating super line.

Thats a pretty good idea. I only have one extra outfit now, and it is spooled with superline. I might just use that one for floats and use the others for bottom rigs. It will save me from re-tying constantly.

As I said before I've never fished much with floats, with a floating superline wouldn't the wind and slight current play havoc with your rig being its on top of the water?

Yea it happens sometimes. Even when using a float with monofilament you have a few problems. Every leaf or stick that floats by gets caught in you line. If currents really bad I usually switch to a bottom rig though. I usually don't mind a slight wind, because it keeps my bait from settling. I usually recast often if the winds stiff. In my opinion you have to take the good with the bad. I just try to remind myself that if I didn't use a float in certain spots I couldn't fish them at all, due to snags on bottom and what not.

I've noticed when I cast a float with mono the memory in the line wants to draw it back to the bank. Is this the reason for using the floating superline?
