2007 was a slow year for my friends and I so we fished for what we could. One day we went down to the creek and tossed a few baits out for channel cats. When we got set up an older gentlemen came walking by and asked what we were fishing for. We told him and he shook his head, he said that we would have a hard time catching catfish when the gar are around. We had at this point never caught a gar. He told us where to look for them and how to spot them. We patiently watched the shadows cast by the trees for fish to breech the surface. Five minutes pass, and one broke the water ever so quietly as he gulped air. We then started tossing crankbaits at them, they would chase and strike but we could never get them. Eventually we tied up a float rig with cutbait and drifted the bait to them. It took a while because we had to learn to let them run with the bait in order for them to get the bait down before setting the hook. We ended up catching a few in a couple hours. It was really exiting, it seemed like we had a bite every 10 minutes. Heres a picture of our largest longnose gar. Its 12 pounds. I thought it was a state record when it surfaced, but they weigh light. Attachments:

They have ruined many nights for me fishing. Lol. They pick the bait up and scream off and as soon as they feel tension they drop it. I've never actually tried to catch one.

A lot of people hate them, so they kill them if they catch them. We released every fish as if it were anything else. One guy told me that they were good to eat, as long as you avoided the eggs. He said they were poisonous.

NEVER I REPEAT NEVER Try to use Gar as CUT BAIT 2 reason's behind this and i know from trying this 1st hand reason 1.....You need a chain saw and tin snip's to cut through them & Reason 2 even other GAR will NOT touch a pice of cut GAR meat on a hook let alone any respecting catfish i sat for 12hrs 1 night on the Ohio river and re baited with fresh gar every 30mins to have nothing hit my bait all night but every time i tossed out shad and gills the gar tore into them and left me with nothing and i fished the gar meat 2 ft from my other baits ......Sniper
