I was flipping through some old fishing articles trying find some information for my GIS project and I stumbled across an article that discussed using balloons as floats. The idea was simple, if fishing at night put a glow stick in a balloon, blow it up, take a coffee stirring straw and tie the balloon in a knot around the straw. This would allow the fisherman to use the balloon as a slip float. This might be helpful if one wanted to suspend a large bait. Anyone ever used a balloon or seen someone use a balloon as a float?

I use the pool noodle that we have discussed on here previouly. They are easy to make and work great.

The bassmasters in Florida use semi inflated balloons for shiners. This allows them to fish among cattails that hang up lines on normal style bobbers.
Chad and I discussed using balloons with light sticks last year and finally decided the baits would tear the balloons up and we would have the baits and the lightsicks on bottom.
I made some bobbers of clear juice bottles with lightsticks inside. I used large rubber bands to attach lines so the bobber would break away when fighting flathead. We got no bites on the bobbers so I can't report if the breakaway idea was good. Visibilty of the light sticks varied with distance and fog/rain factors.

Use a bobber stop, bead and a cheap snap swivel. blow up your balloon to what size you want tie a knot in it and hook the snap to the bottom of the knot. Simple and easy can switch from float fishing to bottom fishing in seconds.

the river monster episode where is he fishing for bull sharks in south Africa he was using a balloon he found out what depth he want to suspend the baits made a loop in the line and attached a rubber band and tied the balloon to that rubber band and when fighting the bull shark the rubber band would break off like katfish said about attaching the juice bottles.

Yes sean i have used em a few times we just kept it simple and tied the baloon on the line they stay inflated and you can slide them up and down we caught a few flats with them. we used the white ones so the green glow stick would shine through the baloon, but the baloon would bust when you were setting the hook or fighting the fish and loose your glow stick,, because of that we stopped using them due to loosing so many glow sticks.
