In a few of my readings, and through pictures on this forum I have noticed that some guys are using spinning reels to catch catfish. I have recently discovered that there are some that have a bait clicker/ bait alert system. Does anyone use the bait clicker system on a spinning reel? Does it work as well as a baitcaster clicker? How easy is it to engage and disengage?

the bait runners are awesome. some of the flat guys might say they are junk for big flats, but you can't go wrong. The Okuma's are great and will work for you. They do make a little bit of a click, but they aren't like a baitcaster clicker. I love mine for fishing current areas. They have an adjustment for how much pressure it takes to pull the line out. If you can't find someone with one to check out, buy one of the cheaper models first. If you are a diehard baitcaster guy already you might not want one, but if you like spinning reels, you'll love them. I like mine being handy for when I'm taking someone that can't use a baitcaster

I have a okuma baitrunner that I never use. I'm just not much of a spinning reel guy for catfish. I imagine I might use it for channels. I just feel comfortable using my baitcasters though.

Thanks, Guys. I don't plan on buying a spinning reel for flats or anything. I just was curious to see if anyone used them. I use spinning reels and bait casters for bass fishing. The spinning reels are good to cast far but don't have much cranking power or a quick retrieve. I imagine they work the same way for flatheads.

cabela's makes one for saltwater called the salt striker that has a bait feeder on it. My friend has two and he seems to like them. I think the thing with spinning reels is to hold more line you have to go bigger and that makes them heavier compared to a baitcaster that is light and can hold just as much line.

I beleive Shimano 6500 would be one of the top shelf baitrunner spinning reels, although the price for a new one reflects that.......I have one and it has a very smooth drag and can throw big mono line, caught some big fish on it too.......
I don't know why anyone would be opposed to using spinning gear for a flathead unless that's just their personal preference.Penn, Shimano, Daiwa to name a few make fine big game spinning reels. I don't beleive a flathead cares whether you're using a spinning or casting reel before taking a bait......

I have an Okuma Avenger ABF 90... I love it!... I bought it last summer at the end of May.... I think the drag is like 22lbs or 25lbs... I have it spooled with 50lbs Power Pro Yellow.... on a 10ft Berkley Reflex that I bought at the same time...my friends call it the tow truck...lol...I can hear the clicker pretty good... you can set the drag on the baitfeed ... and it casts a long ways... very smooth... I'm thinking about buying the Okuma Avenger ABF 50 with a couple of lighter poles ... maybe a couple of the mudville south bend rods... 7ft... my buddy has one and it seems to be a pretty good rod...

I have one of the old shimano 6500 bait runners. Bought it probably late eighties. It's as good now as it was then. Caught a 31 pound blue on it and had no problems. Spinning reels are just as good as bait casters in my opinion.
I have two of the newer shimano 3500's. They are a great channel at reel. As been said, the clicker is not real loud. I would put any of the spinning reels I bought for catfish against any comparable bait caster.
I had an eagle claw spinning reel for flats when I was growing up. My dad has it put up in his drawer now, it's at least 25 years old, but man it's a beauty. I caught a lot of fish on that thing.
