I just bought one of these reels the 6500 model and was wondering how you guys use your bait clicker? I was under the assumption when it was on and then when you turned it off to set the hook or tight line the fish whatever method you use, you had another setting for your drag different from bait clicker mode. When the clicker is on though and you have to loosen your drag to let the fish run, then turn it off and tighten the drag quick to set the hook what's the point. Am I just using this wrong?

When the bait clicker is engaged push the spool release button and your set. When the fish takes the bait I will pick up the reel and turn the clicker off, I also keep my thumb on the spool with light pressure so he can run free without feeling much tension, just enough your spool dont take off freely. Then ill lock it down and wait for him to load the rod then I will set. There is no reason to back your drag off with a bait clicker.

I don't always use a baitclicker but, in heavy current I back the drag off and set the clicker and, when the fish runs I thumb the spool and, bingo. I set my drag during the fight (not before), this way you have total control over the sittuation!!!
To me the whole FREE SPOOL thing is way over rated!!! Free Spooling with Blues is asking for disaster, they hit way to fast and hard to chance a backlash!!

thanks guys, I was doing it wrong I didn't realize you didn't have to mess with the drag while in bait clicker mode. I didn't get the thumb release button was tricky.
