Went out 4 times in the last week. Not sure which variable is preventing me from catching. I have been hitting big ponds/small lakes that I fish all the time and normally do pretty well, but I have only caught a few small whiskers.
So these are the variables I can change, which ones are wrong?
Fish evening times from 6-9ish. Fish deeper water, rather than shallow. Using chicken livers on the bottom.
I also don't know a whole lot about when, where, and how channel catfish spawn, but could this be factoring in?

Id try some cut shad. These channelcats are on fire everywhere right now. I've been fishing an hour before dark till later into the morning. I usually never catch anything of any size on liver. Fresh shad, live or cut chubs, suckers and small green sunfish are the ticket.

I have been having a hard spring bite too. Most of the bites around here right now seem to be after midnight, that's past my bed time. I am sure it will get better soon.

yea castnet bud. dont rule out sunfish, live or cut. I have been getting channels on live ones up to 8inches and when they are not hitting live switch it up to cut or vise versa

What is the best way to rig up live sunfish, shad, or chubs?
How about the shad, do you cast net the shallow water or deep water, lakes or rivers? What is best technique?

I usually rig all my live bait carolina style. As for the shad, right now we have been finding them in shallow bays and around the riprap banks. Now is the time you catch a lot of the big shad before the spawn hatch. I usually scale the shad cut the tail off and filet one side and throw it out whole. You can alswo try chunking it up.
