Just looking for some opinions on the matter.
Do you guys start targeting flats as soon as the water thaws or do you wait for the water temps to come up.
The reason I ask is one of our best flatty spots at tappan was unthawed and in large all around it, we took a cruise down yesterday to see if there was any thaw, we were planning on going today for some channels but fell threw due to getting to where we needed with all this snow. Just seeing it thawed kind of got me thinking, but normally we wait until the temps come up and we can get the boat out.

I like to start Flathead fishing when the water gets around 48 to 50 degress. That seems to be the magical number for me. Last year my first Flat came April 4th, water temp was 48 degress, but i know Rollo is on the river catching them before that.

i usually base it on or around the 1st week of april. i always target channels first and then after a week or so i get the itch for flats, i usually start out on the creek/river/spillway type areas because the water is warmer. also using cut bait in these areas you can very easily hook into a flattie.
